Popcorn Topper: Brewer’s Yeast

March 25, 2010

I was never much of a plain popcorn fan.  I always thought it was such a waste of chewing effort to eat something so flavorless.  Shocking, I know, since most people (including my husband) could live on it.  This all changed when I was introduced to brewer’s yeast (aka nutritional yeast).

Always late to the game, I was not aware that this was already a popular popcorn topper for many.  Brewer’s yeast is savory, nutty, almost cheesy–a flavor combination that is always welcome to my taste buds.  The bonus is that it is also filled with B-complex vitamins, it is a complete protein, and is low in fat and sodium.  Can’t go wrong with that.

I can’t really attest to the flavor of other brands of brewer’s yeast.  The Lewis Labs brand is all I’ve ever used based on positive reviews I read years ago.  It’s available online or at your local health food store.  Over the years, I’ve taken to adding a little paprika and granulated garlic to the yeast giving popcorn a surprising umami kick.  These days, I always smuggle in a spice shaker filled with this mix so I can enjoy popcorn at the movies with my husband.  Of course, everyone has a favorite way of preparing popcorn so I don’t need to describe ours here.  But here’s our take on this delicous topper.  There’s really no recipe for this so adjust the proportions according to your taste.

Brewer’s Yeast Mix

  • 1/2 cup brewer’s yeast
  • 1 -2 Tbsp granulated garlic
  • 1 tsp paprika

Just combine well, store in shaker and sprinkle generously on popcorn.

Great idea. I sometimes use nutritional yeast instead of parmesan. Never thought to try it on popcorn. Thank you for this tasty and healthy idea!

Our favorite topper: truffle oil, parmesan (when we are not substituting), and chives.

Lori, I love its cheese quality. I might never have tasted it if our local indi theather didn’t make it available in a shaker for its patrons. I love your favorite topper! I’ll have to try that, too. 🙂

See how not American I am? I have absolutely no opinion/feeling about popcorn toppers! Nada, niet, zero! No clue! And I never thought you could use brewer’s yeast for it. You made more knowledgeable today 🙂 Thanks for sharing this. I’ll have to try it on hubby (he’s the popcorn eater!)

Sara, I’m still not a huge popcorn eater. This is the only thing that will make me touch plain popcorn. Otherwise, I pass. I hope your hubby likes it. 🙂

Jean – I adore popcorn! My Mom had this cast iron pot that was my Dad’s before they even got married and it was what she uses to make popcorn to this day. I have long wanted to experiment with different flavorings on popcorn. You have inspired me!!! 🙂

Brewer’s Yeast is truly amazing! My sister makes a vegan mac and cheese with it that’s to die for, and I use it in my vegan pesto. Now I’ll totally have to sprinkle it on my popcorn! Thanks!

Is brewer’s yeast the same name as nutritional yeast? If so, then I can imagine how good it’d be on popcorn. I love putting it on just about anything for an almost parmesan flavor.

Hi Evan, yes, they’re one and the same. It’s a great, healthy way to spice up almost anything, isn’t it? 🙂

Wow. Simple and far healthier (and yummier) than that faux-butter. Thanks!

I’ve heard this adds great flavor to popcorn but have never tried it. Popcorn is one of my favorite snacks, though, so we’ll have to give this a try sometime!

Well this was very educational! I have never thought of doing that. This is definitely bookmarked!

I was looking for this yeast for my energy bars. I must go find it. Love popcorn, even plain but with flavor is a bonus!
